About
Joelle M. Fenger, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Oncology) is a board-certified veterinary medical oncologist dedicated to improving cancer care for pets. She provides oncology consultations as a locum Medical Oncologist within Ethos Veterinary Health’s referral hospitals and is also a Clinician Scientist with Ethos Discovery, a nonprofit organization focused on advancing new treatments for complex diseases in both animals and people.
Dr. Fenger earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis. She then completed a combined medical oncology residency and PhD in Comparative and Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology).
Prior to joining Ethos Veterinary Health, Dr. Fenger served as faculty at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where her research focused on understanding the molecular drivers of cancer in dogs—particularly bone and mast cell tumors—and identifying new therapeutic strategies. During her time at Ohio State, she directed the Medical Oncology Residency Training Program and led collaborative research initiatives with physicians and scientists at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center.
In 2021, Dr. Fenger joined Ethos Veterinary Health and Ethos Discovery, where she continues to combine clinical care with translational research. She is passionate about advancing clinical trials and collaborative research efforts that bring new treatment options to pets and people with cancer.
Dr. Fenger remains active in advancing veterinary oncology through research, teaching, and professional service. She serves on the Scientific Education Committee for the Veterinary Cancer Society, contributes to textbooks and scientific publications, and frequently lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to cancer biology and emerging therapies.
As both a veterinarian and a pet owner, Dr. Fenger understands the deep bond between people and their pets and works closely with families to develop thoughtful, individualized treatment plans that prioritize quality of life.
